Redefining Lifelong Learning

Together we are building a global alliance of colleges and universities offering midlife transition programs

The Nexel Collaborative members believe that higher education should embrace students at every age, not only ‘fresh out of high school’ but also to individuals in midlife and beyond. We provide networking opportunities and resources to promote the successful development of college-level programs designed specifically for adults in transition to help them prepare and thrive in the next stage in their long life journey. Our goal is to expand and democratize these programs so that they can be available to all adults seeking a change through going back to school.

Nexel member programs motivate their participants to:

• Renew their purpose (take classes, rediscover meaning and/or direction at a crucial transition stage in life)

• Develop new friendships (build social connections, bond within cohort groups)

• Prioritize wellness (for a healthier, longer lifespan)

• Engage across generations (both in and out of the classroom)

• Contribute to the community (give back, be useful, make an impact).

The Collaborative helps academic leaders consider which program elements and models might work best for their institution, and support them as they develop and launch. Colleagues are eager to brainstorm, share best practices, resources and moral support. Learn more about the benefits and how to participate in this innovative new direction in higher education.

At this critical juncture in the life journey, higher education can play an important role in contributing to the health and wellness of an aging society.
